What is a good essay?
A
good essay generally has about three core concepts.
That is, if you turn your essay topic into a statement,
you should be able to identify approximately three underlying
ideas. Drop any non-significant words, such as 'role,'
'importance,' 'relationship,' etc, and just look at
the nouns remaining. An essay presents a reasoned argument,
an explanation of an idea, or an answer to a question.
A well-written essay guides the reader along a clearly
marked path leading to an appointed destination.
There
are things that one needs to know that contribute to
excellence in writing. They are not hard to learn and
once you know them, they do take practice to gain proficiency.
That practice makes all the difference in the world.
The true quality of your work will be seen in the way
you marshal facts and ideas and control them in your
writing. You should be in command of all you write and
should present your reader with a tightly-knit and carefully
structured argument that shows you have not just knowledge
and understanding, but also possess the ability to analyze,
make judgments and explain cogently your position to
others.
Think
of the outline as a series of notes for a speech. Write,
as you would speak to an audience - clearly, concisely,
cogently in language appropriate to that audience. Offer
brief explanations for any technical terms. Ensure that
the narrative thread remains unbroken from start to
finish. These are basic key points to essay writing.
